Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop

“A Recipe for Success”

Buttermilk Sky Pie ShopTake a southern gal from Memphis who spent summer evenings on nanny’s back porch making homemade ice cream and enjoying her homemade pies and biscuits at meal times and a Missouri farm boy who lived in his granny’s kitchen canning vegetables and fruits and helping bake fresh peach and apple pies and you’ll discover local entrepreneurs and husband and wife team, Scott and Meredith Layton. Founders of the popular Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in Bearden, Scott and Meredith have combined their culinary passions with their three generations of fond memories from their farm kitchen and back porch experiences as youngsters. Add to this their grandmothers’ recipes, and you’ll rediscover your own fond memories, which will take you back to your very own childhood.

“We bake on-site, using our grandmothers’ recipes, creating the very same pies and biscuits we loved as children,” said Meredith. “It’s an experience that will take you back in time, allowing you to enjoy the same tasty treats you may have thought no longer existed.”

So where does the Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop name originate from?

“Well, it’s an old Southern expression to describe a cloudy sky with the clabbered appearance of buttermilk,” said Scott. “It’s even more appropriate when you consider that buttermilk is a key ingredient in so many of the items we feature.”

Now with two locations in Bearden and Turkey Creek, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop serves up 4” and 9” homemade pies that include Granny’s Apple, Southern Buttermilk, Chocolate Meringue, Nanny’s Pecan, and others, in addition to their seasonal pies, including summertime specials Summer Peach and Edisto Key Lime. There’s also their to-die-for, made-from-scratch buttermilk biscuits, whipped butter, chocolate gravy, and biscuit toppings that will take you back to your childhood.

“Beginning this month, we will introduce seasonal, artisan crafted ice cream from local entrepreneur, Elaine Evans, founder of Elaine’s Ice Cream,” said Meredith. “Available by the scoop, you’ll be able to savor Peanuts & Coke, Strawberry Meringue, and others, all designed with Southern palates in mind.”

“We’re also excited for our ‘Pie It Forward’ initiative, which features a special pie flavor each month,” added Scott. “This program allows Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop to give back to our community that has given us so much.”

June’s “Pie It Forward” flavor is Blueberry Cobbler, and it benefits the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

“We are so blessed to be able to share our generations-old family traditions with your family,” said Meredith. “We’d like to thank all of you for your support and encouragement, which has helped Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop experience its overwhelming success.”

The Shrimp Dock

New Year, New You: Let The Shrimp Dock Help You with a Healthy Diet Now for Better Health Later

By Phil and Becky Dangel, Owners

The Shrimp Dock has been part of the Knoxville food scene for almost 20 years and is the area’s top seller of fresh fish and shrimp. Why? Because what we are all about is freshness. Our mission is to provide the freshest seafood and shellfish from the highest quality domestic partners. We only purchase from suppliers who practice sustainable fishing methods, and all of our products are sourced as close to home as possible. Specializing in wild caught shrimp and fish, we always know where our fish comes from, and it’s always fresh, shipped in daily.

Fresh, never frozen fish is delicious and easy to prepare! We offer expert tips on all types of preparations for the home cook – grilling, sautéing, baking, broiling, and frying – or you may want to try our takeout homemade signature soups, dips, spreads, sauces, quiche, seafood pies, crabcakes, and cole slaw, called the best in Knoxville. Also, don’t forget an Eva’s caramel cake; The Shrimp Dock is the exclusive distributor of this renowned delicacy, available in whole or half sizes.

Not only is seafood delicious – it’s vitally beneficial to your health, according to the USDA, which recommends eating a variety of seafood at least twice a week, citing that “beef, pork, and poultry contain solid fats and are mostly devoid of nutrients, but the fat content of seafood, nuts, and seeds comes in the form of oil and is full of nutrients.” Seafood is especially beneficial for breast-feeding women; evidence indicates that eating at least 8 to 12 ounces of seafood each week during pregnancy and while breast-feeding improves babies’ eye and brain development.

The Shrimp Dock also offers lunch (dine-in or take-out) Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm in addition to a Friday night fish fry at all three of our locations. Come in and enjoy a legendary shrimp, oyster, or crabcake po’ boy, all local favorites. We’re also open from noon to 3 pm on Sundays in Farragut, and beginning in February, our Alcoa store will also serve Sunday lunch. Remember, we can cater your party or event from 30 to 1,000 people; our specialty is a Cajun shrimp boil, but we are happy to customize a menu to meet your unique needs.
