By Sylvia Davis, Owner of Louisville Mercantile

We are so excited that our little shop in Louisville is the kind of place people tell their friends about. “You have to go to Louisville Mercantile” is what our new customers have been told – and now tell others! Ten years after opening our doors, Louisville Mercantile has become a place to shop, gather, discover something new, and simply enjoy being there. And we couldn’t be more thrilled.

When I opened Louisville Mercantile in 2016, I really wanted to give the Louisville community something it didn’t have: a place to find beautiful things for the home, thoughtful gifts, and fun things to do – all closer to home. I actually started the shop while I was still working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, after a career that included the University of Tennessee. I didn’t come from a retail background, but I recognized an opportunity to create something my community was missing – a place to gather with others and to find things they needed while discovering things they didn’t know they needed! I knew I wanted a place where you could slow down, get inspired, and leave feeling better than when you arrived.

What began as a small shop has grown into a destination for people from Louisville and beyond. In May 2025, we moved Louisville Mercantile into a new building just down the road from its original location, conveniently located only 15 minutes from West Knoxville via Pellissippi Parkway and the Topside Road exit.

One of the most fun things about Louisville Mercantile is that you never quite know what you’ll find. Our space is filled with home décor, select gifts, furniture, baby things, pantry favorites, seasonal finds, and creative products with new merchandise arriving weekly. Long-time team member Emily Duggan (you’ll recognize her from our social media posts) goes to the Atlanta buying market for our merchandise, and I have learned to trust her individual, exemplary instincts. We also include local makers and carefully chosen consignment pieces to add even more variety. You might come looking for a simple hostess gift and leave with a Case knife, a Susan Shaw necklace, or an Emily Lex watercolor workbook because it looked like fun!

And there’s so much more to do than shop. Creative workshops, Mahjong classes, a book club, and our monthly Saturday Social give people plenty of reasons to meet and spend time together. We love that Louisville Mercantile has become the destination gathering place for friends and families. Treating customers as community rather than transactions has had the exact effect that we had hoped it would.

You’ll find me or my hand-picked team of fantastically helpful ladies behind the counter always available to answer questions or show you the latest merchandise. Along with Emily, you’ll meet Kari (Emily’s mom), Ella, who is our most recent hire and a UT student, and Dianna, who also teaches painting classes – all striving to create a place people enjoy being.
