After 34 years as a special educator, Valerie embarked on a journey into the world of silversmithing approximately seven years ago. She began by enrolling in a beginner soldering class, which taught her that the craft definitely demanded patience, precision, and extensive practice. Despite these challenges, once Valerie discovered the art of silversmithing, she immediately fell in love with it!
Her objective is to create exquisite, one-of-a-kind jewelry that embodies a personal touch and exceptional craftsmanship. Valerie achieves this by utilizing fine and sterling silver and authentic gemstones. Each piece is meticulously hand-poured, hand-textured, and hand-crafted from start to completion with passion and dedication.
“Once I melt the silver and create an ingot, the creative process starts,” explained Valerie, “I frequently modify my plans mid-process as I begin shaping the silver. I genuinely enjoy working with sterling and fine silver.”
Sterling possesses structure and durability, making it an ideal metal for cuffs, rings, and any jewelry requiring additional structure. Fine silver, on the other hand, is softer, facilitating techniques such as fold forming.
Valerie incorporates many processes to create her unique jewelry including fold forming, reticulation, synclasticing and anticlasticing, air chasing, saw piercing, hand sawing, stone setting, and more. Sanding and polishing are crucial finishing steps that transform each piece of jewelry into wearable works of art. Her jewelry features textured bracelets, cuffs, necklace pendants, chains, and earrings of distinct sizes and shapes including an outdoor sports collection.
What does Valerie appreciate most about being in our “Maker City?” “Knoxville is a very unique arts community and is very well supported by the Dogwood Arts committee and Foothills Guild, as well as other organizations. Local artists are encouraged to show and sell their work, and training opportunities to enhance all aspects of the artistry business are offered.” Valerie and her husband of 41 years love living in this area. When she’s not in her studio, Valerie enjoys all the accessible outdoor activities like kayaking and paddle boarding.
