How Organization Can Ease Stress & Anxiety

When you’re surrounded by clutter, it’s hard not to feel anxious or stressed. In a recent survey, it was reported that clutter leads to lowered productivity and increases stress levels. This stress can weigh greatly on your health, though there are ways to ease it. An organized space is beautiful, and it’s also incredibly useful. Along with helping you to feel happier and more relaxed each day, being organized and decluttering your space can help you save time, work better, and enjoy your home more.

ShelfGenie Solutions can help you get organized by increasing storage space, improving access to items, and by allowing you to group like items together – where you need them most. When all your pantry items, countertop appliances, and dishware are easy to spot and easy to reach, the time savings can really add up – time that can be put to other uses. Getting organized with ShelfGenie can also help increase your storage space by up to 50%. That means you can make the most out of your space and get more from your home.

Here are some tips on how you can achieve the organized home that you’re looking for:

1. Declutter
To help declutter and de-stress, try separating your items into four piles: Keep, sell, donate, and toss. If you’re not sure about an item, put it aside and see whether or not you miss it. If you don’t, you and your space will be better off without it. Once you sell, donate, and toss your unneeded items, you’ll feel more relaxed in your space.

2. Look for repeat items
When you have a bunch of “stuff” in your kitchen, it’s hard to find what you’re really looking for. Go through your cabinets, drawers, and pantry to see if you have any repeat items. If you have two blenders, pick the one with more functions and give the other to a friend. If you have eight cans of pasta sauce, keep what you can use before it expires and bring the rest to a food bank. Repeat items can take up a lot of space and often go to waste in your cabinets.

3. Group like items
When your belongings are unorganized, it’s easy to forget what you have. As you go through items to declutter, sort everything into specific groups. That way you can see if you have multiple phone chargers or staplers after all. This makes it easier to decide what to toss and helps you find things right when you need them once they’re sorted.

4. Create kitchen zones
The first step to kitchen efficiency is creating zones for everything you own. Claim separate cabinets for bakeware, kitchenware, countertop appliances, dishes – you name it. You should also have designated drawers for utensils, knives, utility items, and so on. By creating zones in your kitchen, it’ll be easy to remember exactly where your juicer or bottle opener are, which means cooking, cleaning, and unloading the dishwasher will be quick and simple. Plus, keeping things organized and accessible is simple with ShelfGenie Glide-Out shelves, dividers, and other solutions.

5. Strategically store your items
Think about how often you use your items before you store them. If you use your peanut butter every day, you should keep it front and center in your pantry. If you only use your electric mixer to bake birthday cakes, you should keep it in the back of your cabinet. With ShelfGenie Glide-Out shelves, reaching the back of your pantry or cabinet will be just as simple as reaching the front, so you don’t have to worry about moving around items to grab what you need.

To help you get organized, schedule a complimentary design consultation today. Our team would love to create solutions to meet your unique wants and needs.

Putting Your Home’s Ducts in a Row

While homeowners and heating contractors understandably focus on your home’s HVAC efficiency, one area that is often overlooked is your home’s ducts. Your HVAC ducts provide the conduit connecting your furnace and air conditioner to every room in your home. And the internal condition of your home’s hundreds of feet of ducting impact the air quality within your home – the air that you and your family breathe.

Galvanized HVAC ducts and their metallic appearing, flexible duct cousins may appear rather benign, but these same ducts can be home to not only dust, pollen, and debris, but to mold, fungi, and bacteria as well. During construction and renovation, dust and debris are pulled into your home’s HVAC system. Some of the dust, pollen, and debris are trapped by furnace filters, but no furnace filter can trap 100% of dust and debris. Over time, this same dust and debris begins to accumulate in your ductwork, becoming the perfect breeding ground for mold, fungi, and bacteria. And if you have pets at home, the addition of pet hair and dander can make life difficult for family members with allergies and breathing disorders. If you’ve noticed family members sneezing when your home’s HVAC operates, it’s likely that all of this accumulated “stuff” in your ducts is the source of their discomfort.

Well, Gent Heating & Cooling, your trusted name in professional heating and cooling service for more than 20 years, has the solution. Using their truck mounted, high-capacity, high-volume vacuums and powered rotor brushes, their trained service technicians will thoroughly clean your home’s ductwork, safely removing years of accumulated dust, debris, pollen, pet hair and dander, mold, fungi, and bacteria – all the things that can contaminate the air within your home.

To learn more about how to improve the air quality inside your home, or for all of your HVAC sales and service needs at home or at your office, call the clean air professionals today at 865-247-5092.

Create the Ultimate Baking Station with These Organization Tips

Whether you bake on certain holidays or every weekend, it’s helpful to have the supplies and ingredients at your fingertips when the mood strikes you. Before you get started, survey your kitchen for everything you might need for baking so you can determine how much space to carve out. By creating a special section in your kitchen for baking, you can easily access everything you need whenever you want.  Here are some tips for setting up a baking/prep station in your kitchen.

Location in the kitchen
Most kitchens are set up around a functional triangle, incorporating the stove, sink, and refrigerator. Try to use an area within the triangle that has usable counter space for your baking station. Clear a section of your cabinets to store cookbooks, ingredients, and small bowls. Glass jars are a functional and decorative way to store sugar, flour, and other frequently used ingredients in your cabinet. When you can see your ingredients, it’s easier to keep track of inventory.  A stand-alone cart or rack can also be utilized as a baking station when cabinet space is limited. The key is to keep everything together in one section of your kitchen.

Baking utensils and measuring cups
Keep measuring spoons and cups at eye level by hanging them on a peg board on the inside of a cabinet door. Mixing utensils can be displayed on the counter in a decorative jar or in easy to access drawers. Measure your drawer space to configure different size organizers. The wider ones are perfect for spatulas and whisks, while the smaller ones can house food coloring, sprinkles, and more.

Baking sheets and muffin tins
Vertical dividers can help you to see and access baking sheets and tins in the lower cabinets. This customizable solution is also great for cutting boards, baking dishes, and serving platters. If you’re tight on cabinet space, consider using a large basket to store these items.

Mixers and bowls
Store small appliances and bowls on glide-out shelving beneath your workable counter space to keep your counters clear when not in use. Mixers tend to be heavy and bulky and often difficult to store.  Glide-out shelving allows you to look at everything in the cabinet without having to move around all the items every time you need something.

A dedicated space can make baking easy and more enjoyable. Set aside some time to create a baking station in your kitchen. When it comes time to make your next batch of cookies, you’ll be glad you did!

Create a Lifetime of Memories in Your Home’s Kitchen

By Patti Baker, Co-Owner of Granite Transformations

As a young girl growing up in Pennsylvania, my mother’s kitchen became a very special place to me. It was the family gathering place when aunts, uncles, and cousins came to visit. I have fond memories of newborn infants and fiancés being introduced to family members for the first time, fresh baked cookies, and roasted Thanksgiving Day turkey. My own kitchen has similar memories that I hope my children and grandchildren will cherish as well.

America’s kitchens remain our home’s source for a lifetime of memories. Unlike any other room in our home, our kitchen exudes a sense of warmth and comfort that welcomes guests.

I’ve especially enjoyed the last 13 years of my life as my husband, Buddy, and I have helped thousands of area families create their own special gathering place in their home’s kitchen. As owners of Granite Transformations, we have helped countless homeowners transform their kitchens into that unique place we remember as children – a room where they can create all-new memories of their own that will last a lifetime.

The centerpiece of the Granite Transformations’ story is their patented premium engineered granite countertops. They are made from the finest granite, quartz, and post-consumer recycled glass – the highest quality materials combined with state-of-the-art technology – to produce the finest granite countertop surfaces on the market. All the beauty nature has to offer, only better. You deserve the best, and you can get it without the demolition and installation headaches associated with ordinary slab granite.

Granite Transformations’ surfaces outperform ordinary granite, because they are non-porous, stain resistant, and maintenance-free.  There is no sealing necessary to be safe for food preparation. We believe in it so much that we warranty the materials for life.

Granite Transformations’ countertops are ideal for homeowners who demand durability and value. Because Granite Transformations’ granite countertops install over your existing counters without messy, time consuming demolition, you can enjoy your new kitchen in as little as one day. We also do backsplashes, bathrooms, bars, and floors.

Granite Transformations also offers homeowners other products to help transform their kitchens, including cabinet refacing. You can get a whole new look in days, not weeks.

Whether you’re building a new home or updating your existing home, create that perfect family gathering place in your kitchen and create a lifetime of fond memories. Call Granite Transformations today at 865-622-2381 to set up your free, in-home consultation.

The Best Oriental Rug Washing System Just Got Better

By Kerry McDuffie, Owner of Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

Since first launching Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning in 1985, much has changed in our industry.  Technology has made it possible to clean carpeting more effectively and efficiently, and new and improved synthetic fibers have improved both the appearance and longevity of our home’s and office’s wall-to-wall carpeting.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the all-natural materials used in our favorite and treasured Oriental rugs.  Their wool and cotton construction and all-natural dyes, while durable, also make them susceptible to permanent damage if washed improperly.

That’s why I created our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process.  Based on my more than 30 years of carpet and rug washing experience, this system not only washes your Oriental rugs, but it protects them from the damage that can result from improper handling and cleaning.

Today I am proud to announce that our proprietary Oriental rug washing system has become even better thanks to new, state-of-the-art technology. We have just installed the new Marinator Decon System from Rug Reviver in our West Knoxville Oriental rug washing boutique.  This new system allows us to circulate up to 80 gallons of solution per minute throughout your entire rug, leaving your rug cleaner than ever before.  Adding to our already successful 11-step rug washing process, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can safely and efficiently wash your favorite Oriental rugs, protecting them as potential family heirlooms.

Discover for yourself just how East Tennessee’s proprietary, 11-step Oriental rug washing system just got better. Also, you will be pleased to know that our Oriental rug washing turnaround is three weeks or less.

It’s Great to be 10 Years Strong!

By Christina Fitzwilliam

I cannot believe our summer has almost come to an end. All the scheduling that seemed overwhelming at the beginning of summer has come and gone, and I am both relieved as well as a bit remorseful. As I glance through my own home, it’s obvious it is going to need some TLC before I gear up for fall barbeques and weekend get-togethers. Enter the “honey-do list.” Luckily there is one chore my husband, John, doesn’t mind tackling in our home. But it wasn’t always so.

Ten years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried most every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never succumbed to his efforts. I had the same issue cleaning my own tile and grout kitchen floor, and there was little he could do to help me.

So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband was skeptical. His skepticism gave way to sheer excitement as he saw what these magical tools could do. He still gets giddy from time to time when he encounters a floor that looks beyond help that he can transform into something beautiful.

That first week we practiced in our own home, and I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they were equally thrilled.

Here’s what I’ve learned during the last 10 years. Every now and then, even the most well-cared for and well-maintained house needs an occasional deep cleaning – cleaning places that are not in a regular cleaning schedule or places that are hard to clean. Dirt contaminants build up over time and cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. Dirt becomes trapped within the pores of your floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures.

Surface Doc has some really cool equipment that simply does what we can’t possibly do on our own. With a combination of high heat, high pressure, and a powerful spinning brush, all contained under a pressure hood, your floors will have no choice but to release the soil and contaminants buried deep within them. This process allows for the complete removal of years of build-up within your floor.

If it’s time for your floors to look new again, give Surface Doc and John a call.

Considerations When Buying Vinyl Replacement Windows

By Chris Moon, Co-Owner of Window Works

There are great many considerations confronting homeowners who are considering the purchase of new replacement windows for their home. Vinyl replacement windows today account for 60% of all window sales nationally. Technological advances in manufacturing, along with the attractiveness of today’s vinyl windows and the fact that they will never need painting, make them popular with an ever growing number of homeowners. They can also make your home’s interior quieter, less drafty, and are easier to clean and maintain.

So how important is the selection of a vinyl window brand? Your selection is important but perhaps not nearly as important as the company you purchase your replacement windows from. Think of your new windows and the company you purchase them from as a system. The best windows improperly installed will result in poor window performance.

At Window Works, we strive to provide all of our customers with an experience that exceeds their expectations. A family owned, second generation company, we are A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau and have been recognized by numerous organizations for our expertise and professionalism, including Angie’s List’s Super Service Award.

We offer the highest quality vinyl replacement windows from the top manufacturers in the nation, including OKNA, a premier vinyl and composite window manufacturer known for their superior design and engineering advances. But, more importantly, we offer professional installation, with each team supervised by a craftsman with 20+ years of experience – and all backed up by a manufacturer’s lifetime limited warranty, a written pledge of lifelong quality and performance.

Whether your home needs replacement windows, siding, patio doors, or gutters, I invite you to discover the Window Works difference. From our family to yours, we promise you an experience that will exceed your expectations without the high pressure sales tactics you might have come to expect.
