Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists

Unprecedented Individual Care

How can a group practice offer the one-on-one personal care that women desire? How can my doctor offer me the experience of multiple specialists without ever leaving the office? How can the newest OB/GYN group in town offer the most experience? Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists has the answers!

These were some of the questions that the physicians of Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists were trying to answer when they decided to form a new group in 2009. Dr. David Owen, who has over 30 years of private practice experience in Knoxville, was especially sensitive to the first question. “My patients were voicing concern over the impersonal nature of most group practices,” he said. He and several other forward thinking physicians decided there had to be a better way.

Dr. Robb McKeown and Dr. Dean Turner, who combine for over 30 years of experience, also recognized the difficulty in being able to provide every service for every patient. “We all have areas of individual expertise and specialty, but it is impossible to be the best at everything,” notes Dr. McKeown.

Dr. Owen, Dr. McKeown, and Dr. Turner joined with Dr. Curtis Elam and Dr. Steve Pierce to form Fort Sanders Women’s Specialist in 2009. “The most important issue for me was to have partners that I could count on at all times,” voiced Dr. Elam.

Every one of our OB patients has a single doctor as their primary physician. They see the same person for almost every visit. Dr. Turner is quick to point out, “Our patients arrive at the hospital telling the nursing staff who their doctor is, not who the group is.”

Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists utilizes the expertise of Dr. Perry Roussis and Dr. Gary Stephens from Fort Sanders Perinatal Center to read every 18-20 week Ultrasound anatomy screen. Dr. Stephens explains, “Clinical studies prove that significantly more birth defects are identified early when a Fellowship trained High Risk OB reviews the Ultrasound.” In addition, Dr. Roussis and Dr. Stephens are immediately available if any high-risk situation arises.

In 2010, the group expanded their size and level of expertise by adding Dr. L. Michael Fields and Dr. G. Walton Smith. Dr. Fields and Dr. Smith helped the group develop the Center for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Utilizing the commitment to technology at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital, the group can now offer a level of GYN care that is not found anywhere else in East Tennessee. Dr. Smith is currently the only AIMIS certified physician in Knoxville, although Dr. McKeown and Dr. Elam should soon join that rank. “Our partner, Dr. Fields, brings over 700 Robotic cases as his experience,” reports Dr. Smith. Most Physicians in town are working on their first 15 to 20 cases. The Physicians of Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists have performed multiple “firsts” in Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery. “We are striving for less than three percent open-incision rate for our patients,” explains Dr. Fields. “We are driven to offer quicker recoveries, safer procedures, and less painful surgeries for our patients.”

Dr. Fields recently performed a Robotic Hysterectomy on a uterus that was equivalent to a full term pregnancy! The lady was able to go home the next morning – pretty impressive for someone who had driven here from Missouri just for this level of expertise.

This year Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists added Dr. Dana Teagarden to the roster. Dr. Teagarden is a vocal advocate for women’s health issues. She was searching for a group that shared the same commitment to individualized care that has shaped her practice. Dr. Teagarden provides expertise in adolescent Gynecology and counseling.

A group where your doctor is focused on your individual care! Experts in the same office for your doctor to consult with! Over 150 years of private practice experience here in Knoxville! Welcome to Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists.

Audibel Hearing Aid Center

The Gift of Hearing
Nothing Sounds Better

Audibel Hearing Aid CenterAs a boy, Joe Simpson found it hard to sit still. During church service, much to the dismay of his mother, Joe would constantly shift and squirm while his mother would whisper to no avail for him to stop.

Joe was not an unruly child, so his mother suspected there was something else going on. Her suspicions were confirmed when she took Joe to an audiologist. Tests revealed that Joe had 70% hearing loss in his right ear as well as 15% loss in his left. As luck would have it, Joe’s father worked as a hearing specialist, so by the age of nine, Joe was fitted for his first hearing aid.

Not many people realize the scope of the problem. Approximately 33 million Americans experience some level of hearing loss, and surprisingly, only 10% who suffer actually seek treatment.

“My hearing loss as a child was the single greatest motivation for pursuing my career as a certified hearing specialist,” said Joe. “My quality of life was vastly improved through hearing aid technology and I wanted to help improve the lives of others suffering from the same problem.”

With a total of eight Audibel hearing care centers, five in the Knoxville area, Joe and his dedicated team of hearing aid specialists are committed to helping East Tennesseans overcome their hearing loss and to re-experience natural hearing.

“Overcoming this problem opens up an entirely new world for my patients,” said Joe. “I can’t imagine a more rewarding profession. Knowing how it’s changed my life, I’ve made it my life’s ambition to reach out to so many others whose quality of life I know I can impact.”

Audibel, one of the best known and most respected names in the hearing aid industry, was a perfect fit for Joe to team up with. Together they offer area residents a new level of smart technology hearing aids that provide the very best results available for users.

“Unlike the simple ‘amplifier only’ aids you see advertised on television, the Audibel difference has brought technology to an entirely new level by offering hearing devices that actually discern and adapt to their environment, providing not only a comfortable fit which is nearly undetectable by others, but also an unprecedented level of natural hearing,” explained Joe.

Why not experience what you’ve been missing by discovering the difference that Audibel and Joe Simpson’s team can make in your life or the life of a loved one. Call today to find a hearing care center near you and rediscover the gift of hearing. Nothing sounds better.

Nourish Skin Studio

A Different Atmosphere That Produces Superior Results

By Wendy Jackson

Have you visited Nourish Skin Studio? If not, you should! The owners, Amanda Burnett and Sydney Ferrigno, have created a very unique skincare spa. Not only can they help make you look and feel great, the products and services they offer are affordable.

“We wanted to be able to offer professional services at a price so clients could come in on a regular basis,” said Burnett. “We want our clients to see a difference in their skin. We make it so facials are not just a luxury, but affordable, so they can enjoy the relaxing skin treatment regularly and benefit from the results.”

Ferrigno echoed her partner’s statements and said, “Both Amanda and I have many years in the aesthetics business. We know if you are able to take care of your skin consistently, it responds. In addition, we want to have a results-driven result. This means we offer more than the basics. Every facial is customized because each person has individual needs.”

In addition to custom facials, that can include a chemical or enzyme peel or diamond resurfacing, the Nourish Skin Studio also offers facial and body waxing with both hard and soft wax, spray tanning, airbrush makeup application, and massage via massage therapist Julie Harris.

Nourish Skin Studio is located on the second level of the The Orangery on Homberg Drive. The studio’s atmosphere is quiet and relaxing and more intimate than what you would find at larger spas. “Amanda and I share the same views on how to connect with our clients,” said Ferrigno. “We want to teach them how to take care of their skin at home so that they see even greater improvements. We also want to connect to our clients on a very personal level. That is why we have created a very intimate setting that is different than what’s available at larger spas.” On top of that, we aren’t tied to one skincare line, like most spas, which means we can treat every client as an individual.”

Do you have a special event on the horizon and you want to look your best? If so, both Burnett and Ferrigno have reputations at being expert make-up artists and they are a favorite choice among brides. The studio’s airbrush foundation gives a natural look, yet it is water resistant, which means it will stand up to not only happy tears, but the heat of summer. They often will go on site and work magic on an entire bridal party.

Heart Help With Just the Right Timing – Restoration Heart Care Knoxville

Heart Help with Just the Right Timing
www.restorationheartcare.com
Charles Jones knows firsthand the benefits of the new Enhanced External Counterpulsation treatment – since he’s been going through the procedure, he’s been feeling better, walking better and, best of all, he’s avoided heart surgery.

Enhanced External Counterpulsation, or EECP for short, is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure designed to help people suffering from heart conditions such as angina. Patients lie on a table and three cuffs are wrapped around their calves, thighs and buttocks. An air compressor inflates and deflates the cuffs, which helps move blood from the patient’s lower limbs to the heart. Each wave of pressure is timed with the heartbeat so the blood flows at peak times and the heart doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood to the rest of the body.

“I took 50 treatments, and they’ve been wonderful,” Jones said. “I’m hoping to get some more treatments because they’ve done wonders. I do feel better.”

Jones had had trouble walking prior to the EECP treatments, but he says the procedure makes him feel well enough to walk around his home and the grocery store. He has more energy now and hasn’t had to have any heart surgery.

Clinical studies show more than 75 percent of patients benefit from EECP therapy, and the benefits can last as long as three years post-treatment. It’s covered by most insurance policies, with no out-of-pocket expense to the patient. It’s pain-free and much safer and cheaper than heart surgery.

Angina occurs when the heart muscles don’t get enough blood to pump properly. This can cause pain during physical activity, when the heart is pumping fastest and needs the most oxygen. In most people, angina is caused by coronary artery disease. EECP is considered a safe and effective alternative to surgery, or at least a way to prolong the need for surgery, for patients who suffer from angina and similar heart conditions. It’s an outpatient procedure that doesn’t require any anesthetic.

Terrific Tomatoes – Ellenburg Nurseries

Terrific Tomatoes
ellenburgnursery.com

This being the very merry month of May, it is time to start the summer vegetable garden. Having made it through the winter, now we turn our eyes toward better days, brighter flavors, and bigger harvests. Possibly the biggest star of the summer garden is the tomato. First, however, let us get a site ready for this popular player.

In choosing a site, people will generally pick a part of the lawn in the backyard. That’s fine, but if the grass didn’t grow well there, then neither will a vegetable garden. This means a good site is one where there is plenty of sun (at least six hours), good soil drainage, and fair fertility. My general rule is that if you are just growing a few vegetables for your own small family, a raised bed will do well; if, however, you want to grow vegetables for the whole block and your extended family, then a conventional backyard garden where you plant directly in amended native soil is the right choice.

Generally, the advantage to raised beds is more intensive growing because you have more control over the soil for the plants and better weed control. For tomatoes, you want to provide a loose well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Adding stuff like composted manures, organic soil conditioner, or peat go a long way to improving what you have or creating soil for a raised bed. The staff at Ellenburg’s can help you choose the right soil amendments for your situation.

When selecting tomatoes, be prepared to be dazzled by all the varieties that are available. An entire galaxy of flavors, colors, and sizes are at your disposal. All it boils down to is your personal visual and flavor preferences. If you want that old-timey flavor that your parents or grandparents enjoyed, an heirloom like ‘Brandywine’ might please you. Heirlooms, however, are less resistant to various diseases which a newcomer like ‘Celebrity’ or ‘Better Boy’ can resist. Heirlooms tend to be a bit more acidic and lower in sugar (sweetness) than the newer varieties.

No variety, antique or modern, is resistant to blossom-end rot. This disease isn’t so much a disease as it is growing conditions. It arises because of a lack of calcium in the tomato. This is avoided by providing enough calcium for the tomato plants. Organic fertilizers such as Tomato-tone® or Garden-tone® are excellent because they have low nitrogen levels (but high P and K) which is important in fruit set and developing fruit as opposed to foliage while providing other nutrients such as calcium.

Another way to avoid the rot, and the most common, is to provide consistent soil moisture. If you can’t be out there every other day soaking the garden, a good 2-3” layer of hardwood mulch can cut your watering down to two to three times a week by moderating soil temperatures and reducing soil moisture loss. Hardwood mulch biodegrades and adds organic matter season to season, improving the soil.

Come in to Ellenburg’s Nursery for all your summer garden needs and expertise! Your totally terrific tomato and vegetable garden awaits you!

The Seasons Top Five: How to Pursue Wellness

The Seasons Top Five: How to Pursue Wellness
Here are the Seasons top five suggestions for the pursuit of wellness.
1. Evaluate Your Diet.
Do you make good food choices? Are you overweight? The latest statistics indicate that 58 million Americans are overweight, 40 million are obese, and 4 million are morbidly obese. The vast majority of illness is caused or complicated by being overweight.
2. Evaluate Your Activity.
Do you exercise? Small choices add up to increased physical activity, so park further from the grocery store entry and WALK. Take the stairs. Stop working at the computer for 5 minutes and do 50 situps.
3. Have a Wellness Checkup at Seasons of Farragut. The Seasons approach to wellness is centered around balance and prevention. A few medical tests will reveal where your body is deficient. A wellness regimen tailored to YOUR body will relieve hot flashes, sleep difficulties, mood swings and even weight gain.
4. Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Vitamin D. Studies indicate the importance of Vitamin D in disease prevention. The level of cold and flu increases in the winter largely due to the decrease of Vitamin D in our system. Medical research even suggests that Vitamin D is the BEST prevention for flu–even better than the vaccine. At Seasons, we evaluate your Vitamin D levels and offer medical-grade Vitamin D supplements in capsules, drops, and even injections, if needed.
5. Decrease Stress. Stress is the enemy. Don’t spread yourself too thin. Take time to smell the flowers. Find a de-stresser that works for you, whether it’s weekly Bible Study, a good book, or coloring with your kids.

For more information about the Seasons approach to wellness or to schedule an appointment, contact us at 865.675.9355 or visit our website at www.seasonswellness.com.
