An Open House like No Other

Elegant Essentials

By Wendy Jackson

Stephen and Linda Parrent know the expression that ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ is true. Four years ago this month they opened Elegant Essentials and they’ve loved every minute of it. The store is a favorite with Knoxville shoppers and has become a premiere go-to place for those extra special items that you won’t find in big department stores.

“Gift shops should be distinctive, and that’s what Elegant Essentials is all about,” said Linda. “I’m always actively searching for things that are different and not the typical stuff that can be found in other stores. Whether it is jewelry, gourmet food, pottery, clothing, gift baskets, florals and décor, the public knows they can come here and we’ve got them covered.”

“Stephen and I have made some great relationships with our customers over the past four years,” said Linda. “These people are the reason we’re here and doing what we love. So this year, for the shop’s anniversary, we wanted to do something extra special as a thank you to our customers. We’ve planned an extraordinary 4th Anniversary Open House. Yet, unlike other events, this event will run for an entire week. Each day of the Open House will be unique and full of fun surprises. We’re going to kick it off on Sunday, Nov. 6th and it’ll continue through the following Sunday.”

“Each day of the Open House we’ll have yummy samplings for people to nibble and sip on,” said Linda. “The samplings I’ll be preparing will give folks a chance to find exactly what they want to buy for themselves for their holiday entertaining, or they can put their favorites into a gift basket for someone else. We will also have discounts on many of the unique items that we carry in the shop. The discounts will change from day to day, no two days of the Open House will be alike. It’s going to be a blast and this will be a great time for folks to get a head start on their Christmas shopping because our daily specials are going to be over the top.”

On top of the samplings and the daily specials, all Christmas décor at Elegant Essentials will be 50% off retail price. “People love our holiday décor and it goes fast,” said Linda. “If someone is going to be in the market for it this year, they really need to come to the Open House and get it while it’s available at the discounted price. Once the Christmas décor is gone, it’ll be gone for the season.”

If that weren’t enough, if you stop by during the Open House week, you can put your name in the hat for one of Linda’s special Gourmet Gift Baskets. Only one entry per day is allowed. Linda’s gift baskets are truly unique, so be sure to stop in each day for all the fun and to get your name in for the drawing that will be held at the end of the day on Sunday, Nov. 13th.

As always, no matter who you are shopping for, Elegant Essentials will have something to please. On top of individual items such as Chamilia, Love Heals and Kameleon jewelry, Redneck Wine Glasses, Sweetea Shirts, Pirose scarves and more, gift baskets can be personally made, and you will find unique ornaments, centerpieces, wreaths and more to meet your holiday decorating needs. Stop in and see for yourself why Elegant Essentials is the place to Find a Treasure, Set a Trend, Make a Tradition.

Chic Boutique

Chic Boutique in Historic Downtown Loudon

Two surprises await you when you enter this trendy women’s fashion boutique in historic downtown Loudon. First is its beautifully decorated windows and its fully “merchandised” interior. Second, you may have a difficult time identifying its brand new apparel and accessories from its upscale consignment apparel and accessories.

Chic Boutique is a labor of love for owner Gail Edwards and her experienced and dedicated staff of associates. “Owning a shop has gotten back into my blood,” says Gail. “Perhaps I’ll never be able to retire from what I truly love.”

This former owner of an upscale women’s and children’s consignment boutique in Evans, Georgia has combined her years of experience into creating the ideal shopping venue, which she has owned since early 2009. More than just racks upon racks of clothes, Chic Boutique combines the best of brand new apparel, jewelry, scarves and gifts with upscale designer consignment clothing that, quite frankly, appears “brand new” at a 30-70% savings.

“We’re very selective about the clothing we accept,” says Gail. “In fact, it’s helpful to visit Chic Boutique before you consign your gently used clothing for resale.”

What you’ll discover at Chic Boutique is about half their inventory is brand new and the other half is upscale consignment items, all beautifully displayed, including ensembles designed to help you to coordinate and accessorize.

And it gets even better. This fall and winter, shipments of new apparel, scarves, jewelry and more will begin arriving weekly. And you’ll love the fact that they purchase only a few of each item, which is a great way to reduce the potential for your selection to be worn by another Chic Boutique admirer.

You’ll also love their new line of affordable jewelry, designed by some of the same designers and artisans that create jewelry for Chico’s. And don’t forget, carefully selected upscale designer apparel arrives each and every day.

Discover the Chic Boutique shopping experience for yourself and stay in fashion with the latest trends at the most affordable prices.

Val’s Boutique

“A fabulous kind of find”

Knoxville native, Farragut High School and University of Tennessee graduate, and former medical industry account executive, Valerie Guess, has added a new venture to her short, and yet exciting, entrepreneurial repertoire: Val’s Boutique. This trendy West Knoxville women’s boutique features the very latest in fashion trends from top designers at affordable prices for women of all ages. The wide variety of dresses, tops, jackets/cardis, bottoms, shoes, purses and jewelry, in addition to Val’s Boutique’s friendly and knowledgeable associates, have created a fun and stress-free shopping experience.

The visionary behind Val’s Boutique, Valerie Weissinger Guess, has been described by her parents as “always having a mind of her own.” But rather than suppress their energetic and strong willed daughter, they encouraged her to work hard and to pursue her dreams.

Valerie’s entrepreneurial pursuit actually began in 2007 when she founded Val’s Closet, a home-based retail clothing business.

“I began by marketing young women’s apparel at sorority, country club and charitable events throughout the south,” said Valerie. “This valuable experience provided me with the knowledge required to launch a successful brick-and-mortar version of Val’s Closet, which opened just this April as Val’s Boutique.”

Conveniently located at 7309 Kingston Pike, Val’s Boutique is just a short drive from downtown Knoxville, Sequoyah Hills, Bearden, Farragut, Concord and Hardin Valley.

With apparel and accessories for nearly every occasion, not to mention gifts, Val’s Boutique is quickly earning the reputation for becoming Knoxville’s fun place to shop for women’s fashions. Open from 11 am to 6 pm daily, and closed Sunday, you are invited to discover for yourself a totally new shopping experience, the result of one person’s unique talents combined with a passion to serve others.

Todd Richesin Interiors

Explore UPSTAIRS

Interior design duo Todd Richesin and Bobby Brown have recently launched their latest venture, UPSTAIRS at Todd Richesin Interiors. UPSTAIRS is located at Todd’s new office at the corner of Kingston Pike and Lyons View Pike in the iconic “Up And Down” service station building, at 4514 Old Kingston Pike. Built in the 1930’s and restored a few years ago by Sam Furrow, the building is the perfect place to combine both the interior design business and the products available at UPSTAIRS.

For the past 11 years, Todd Richesin Interiors has operated out of Todd and Bobby’s home in West Knoxville. In 2010, Todd was named as one of the “Top 20 Next Wave of Interior Designers” by House Beautiful magazine, and also as one of “20 Designers to Watch” by Traditional Home. In addition to these two incredible honors, Todd had two of his projects published by Traditional Home in 2010. In June, there was an 11-page spread of a home he did in Key West, Florida, and in November, there were nine pages of a home he did in Greeneville, Tennessee.

The response to these honors has been really well received on a local level. Todd and Bobby felt that the time was right to expand their businesses and make Todd Richesin Interiors more accessible to people in Knoxville. The design studio and office space in the new location is a real step of growth for this company. The design studio is filled with the latest in beautiful fabric samples; the furniture, lighting, and accessory resources are limitless. Everything is presented in a clean and modern setting with incredible natural light. The light is truly amazing in the new space. Todd’s personal office is situated at what many would call one of the most exciting views in Knoxville. There is an incredible energy in the space with all the traffic bustling by just outside the curved glass windows.

Todd Richesin Interiors specializes in listening to the client’s needs and wants, and interpreting their dream and vision into reality. “Listening is one of the most important attributes of a good designer,” says Todd. “I want projects to look like my clients live there, not me. An interior should reflect the owner and their interests, not the designer’s personal style or taste.”

When you talk with Todd’s clients, that is the exact response you get. “Todd gave me exactly what we asked for… and so much more,” says a client on Cherokee Boulevard. “We gave him a specific list of needs for our family and a source of inspiration and he delivered exactly what we wanted and exceeded our goals.”

UPSTAIRS at Todd Richesin Interiors is the perfect complement to the design studio. Located on the Lyons View Drive side of the building, UPSTAIRS offers a unique shopping experience in a gallery like space flooded with natural light from all four sides. The concept for UPSTAIRS is a take on the way Todd and Bobby live in their own home in West Knoxville. Their signature mix of antiques, fine art, quality new furniture pieces, unique accessories, and luxuriously appointed upholstery is showcased beautifully here. New items range from tables, chests, lamps, dining chairs, mirrors, and artwork, all the way down to beautiful accessories, candles, and items perfect for that last minute gift. The liberal use of color has always been one of Todd and Bobby’s trademarks, and it is beautifully presented at UPSTAIRS.

The shop is reminiscent of the boutique style shops the couple loves to look for while traveling in Europe. Treasures abound around every corner. You can’t just take a quick walk through to see everything, you have to take time to drink it in and walk through more than once. It really is a treasure hunt, and the curved glass windows draw you through the store to one of Knoxville’s most energetic views.

UPSTAIRS is the perfect complement to Todd and Bobby’s other business, Bobby Todd Antiques, in historic downtown Sweetwater, TN. In order to get the full effect of the work that Todd and Bobby do, and the range of products offered, you have to visit both stores!

Color Theory

Enduring an unusually cold, snowy and dark winter has made any hint of springtime a welcome relief! As you enter The Lily Pad, you’ll be greeted by color for spring and lots of it! We’re calling it the E-season for color… Exquisite! Expressive! Exclusive! and Exciting!

For spring 2011, there is not one color palette or color family that can be singled out as the new “it” color, according to Pantone Color Institute. Instead, they’re forecasting a rise in complementary color… colors from opposite sides of the spectrum being paired together.

Apparel is less expensive in relation to investment purchases; you may love purple, but when it comes to buying a car, you’ll lean toward pewter, gray or black. Purple will show up in less expensive buys such as your apparel or accessories… perhaps a purple faux-leather purse will become your fashion “fix!”

Imagine using tomato red with hunter green… doesn’t look like Christmas; rather, combining complementary colors allows us to look at color differently than we might have before. While pairing colors with their “opposites” may sound like trying to mix oil and water, it’s really just a fresh, new approach for a fresh, new season!

Refreshing splashes of invigorating brights punctuate classic, versatile neutrals as designers offer a playful spring palette for endless possibilities and very creative combinations.

Now have some fun as you pair yellow with purple… Exquisite! Hunter greens and spicy reds… Exclusive! Apricot and medium blue… Expressive! Any of these combinations, when wearing with your black slacks or gray skirt, can refresh this classic look with minimal shopping!

The spring 2011 color palette perfectly reflects the cheerfulness of the season. Neutrals combine with pops of bright color to create unique, distinctive looks, which are the basis for a great spring and summer wardrobe. Have fun with color as we begin our approach into this most awaited season.

Creating Open Floor Plans

Foyer_webThe way we live and socialize nowadays with family and friends is very different from what it was centuries ago. Looking at a house floor plan from the 18th century, one might find the kitchen at one side of the house and the dining room way down a corridor on the other end – both rooms being clearly defined by four walls and separated from other living areas in the house. Things have changed and floor plans now usually reflect a very open feel, one room flowing into the other, rooms not necessarily being divided by a wall and certain areas only broadcasting their purpose by a strategic placement of furniture. The biggest and most dramatic impact has been in the kitchen, dining and living room spaces.  This was also the case for my homeowners Beth and Bill and their newly constructed house. They had a vision of a floor plan where the cooking, dining and entertaining area would be one larger room, yet very comfortable and livable.
Because of this open floor plan, our goal during construction and the selection of interior finishes was to create a unifying theme throughout the house and pull certain elements like hardwood flooring, molding details, lighting and wall colors from room to room.
The first room right off the entry hall would logically be the dining room in a formal, more traditional setting, but we decided to use this area as their music room which offered plenty of space for the baby grand piano and a seating area. The goal was to create a more formal setting in this room, so our fabrics for the window treatments were silk, whereas the main living areas of the house have beautiful linen fabrics with some more texture and no sheen to reflect the comfortable living atmosphere we wanted to create.
The real challenge, however, was to design the living room, kitchen and eating area.  A lot of measuring and re-measuring went into deciding on the proper size of our kitchen island. The goal was to maximize its size without taking space away from the adjacent dining room table.  With placing the table in the open area between the kitchen and the living room, it allows for a very social and interactive atmosphere. Instead of “barely ever” using a formal dining room, the table was moved into the center of all the action and now is actually being used on a daily basis by all of the family members.
