Knoxville High Apartment Living

Live Easy. Love Life.

On the corner of 5th Avenue and Central Street, the elegant old Knoxville High School building is a well-known landmark to those who love the city of Knoxville – and a cherished memory for those who studied within its walls. The school officially closed its doors to students in 1951, but it remained a part of city life through various uses until 2015.

That’s when local firm Dover Signature Properties saw incredible potential in the bones of the place. Owners Laurie and Rick Dover and their team planned a thorough restoration effort that would bring back life to the old classrooms by turning them into luxury senior apartments. The layout and design of the former school building were a natural fit for creating living spaces, and its appealing architectural details gave the new space a personality and character you simply can’t find in new construction.

As a building in the Classical Revival style that appears on the National Register of Historic Places, Knoxville High was restored with faithful attention to historic detail while also meeting stringent LEED environmental standards. The result is a building that’s beautiful to look at – and comfortable to live in. Knoxville High Apartment Living, which was named the number one renovation project for senior living in the country by Senior Housing News in 2019, is designed to be an all-inclusive lifestyle choice – your monthly fee includes most of the expenses of everyday living and covers services like housekeeping, transportation, and the most amazing chef-prepared meals you’ve ever tasted. We have 80 newly renovated apartments that are luxurious and full of architectural character, all for a price that’s more affordable than other independent living choices in Knoxville.

Our aim is to make your life easier in every respect. We want you to relax, have fun, and leave the work of daily life to us. Living at Knoxville High gives you the freedom and space to create your own signature version of retirement, all while meeting new people and enjoying the best of our growing and vibrant city.

Whatever your vision is for your retirement, Knoxville High Apartment Living can make it easier to achieve.

Stay well physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The health of our residents is extremely important to us. We include group wellness activities on the daily schedule with Performance Training, Inc. and Agility.

We also contract with health professionals to provide on-site services at your request, and our central location means you’ll be near Knoxville’s healthcare hub at Fort Sanders and the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Many houses of worship of all faiths are located within blocks of Knoxville High. Transportation is always available so you can attend services.

Downsize your burdens. At Knoxville High, you’re free of the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and yard work, so you can pursue what makes you happiest. Transportation is included, so you can be free of your car as well if you like.

Eat like a king. Or queen. Executive Chef Shaun Calico provides three delicious meals a day for all our guests, and we won’t be surprised if you never feel the need to go to a restaurant. The menu is seasonal, fresh, and full of surprises.

Find new friends. Knoxville High is, first and foremost, a community. Our residents eat meals together, join each other for museum trips and concerts, and form strong friendships that make life more enjoyable. We keep a full and active social calendar and welcome all our residents to join in the fun – one night we might have a sing-along in the piano lounge, another a wine tasting in the courtyard. You’ll never lack for things to do.

Enjoy the city experience. Located where Old North Knoxville meets the historic Old City, Knoxville High gives you instant access to all the cultural activities that Knoxville is well known for: Museums, restaurants, festivals, concerts, and so much more. And we often bring in local artists and organizations – like the Knoxville Opera and the East Tennessee Historical Society – for outstanding cultural programs right here on the premises.

Knoxville offers so many options for entertainment that it’s impossible to list them all. Bowl with your friends in a historic boutique bowling alley. Dine overlooking the gently flowing Tennessee River. Or enjoy the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in the historic Tennessee Theatre. Knoxville’s cultural life is blossoming like never before, and there’s always something new to try.
